okay, let me kind-of answer my own question -- the templates are there,
but they are above the language level directories:

 /usr/lib/openoffice/share/template/

The whole experience of creating documents from templates leaves something
to be desired between ooimpress, oowriter and oocalc..

I'll send up my presentation templates to openoffice.org today.
