Please include some more info:


What tool you are using to sign the document (cmsutil or openssl cms?)
The text version of the certificate you are using.

I doubt it is the fact that it is an MS word document that is causing 
trouble.  It sounds like the tool you are using is trying to check 
revcation status, and either can't find it in the cert or can't talk to 
the remote URL to fetch the revocation list.
