cd-r scsi prob

Hello and thanks to anyone that has seen something like this and can help.

I'm having problems on RHLinux 8.0 system (all patches applied via RHN) with r/w cd
drives. We used the selfsame drives to load the op sys on the box, but are having real
trouble with the system becoming cpu bound by errors on the drive when there is nothing
even in it. Some times this happens right after booting, sometimes after a couple of
days. These systems reboot after a time, I suspect this is part of the problem. I've
been killing magicdev and nautilus after boot with "killall magicdev", etc. Still, the
systems get cpu bound and/or reboot. Here's some output from the log file:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are two cd drives on the system, one r only, the other r/w.
At boot time, we see this from the /var/log/messages file concerning the r/w cd drive:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Feb 9 14:35:59 localhost kernel: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
Feb 9 14:35:59 localhost kernel: sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 48x/48x writer cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
Feb 9 14:36:02 localhost kernel: cdrom: This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once the system is up, we start seeing these scsi0 errors, and it just keeps on rolling:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Feb 9 19:49:13 localhost kernel: scsi0 channel 0 : resetting for second half of retries.
Feb 9 19:49:13 localhost kernel: SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0.

00 00 00 00

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
and it goes on until the system reboots. This could roll for hours.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I had top running on this system to keep an eye on it. When I came back the next day,
I noticed that magicdev was at the top of top, the screen frozen from the disconnect.
I had killed magicdev and nautilus at the last boot.

Any relief from this r/w cdrom thing? Or, should I just disconnect them (I have them
on 16 systems).

Any insights would be appreciated.

Regards,

Mike
