You have entirely different hardware, so what I wrote may not even
apply to you. "hdparm" is the tool I use to configure hard disks.

However, if you think your disks lock up the system somehow, you
could try to find out whether that's the case (the HDD LEDs never
flash again, right?) by installing a cron job that causes disk
activity very couple of minutes. Using "logger" and logging to
console you could check what else still runs.
