RE: Linux vs Windows


and yes i agree that the linux net and web and ftp and networky stuff is far bettter than windows as i eluded to in my post.

And although i do agree that linux and unix systems are a bit more complex than windows, they do not really have to be...

what i mean is this... windows does not seem so complex because the GUI and interfaces are simple and intuitive for the beginning user.  Many (not all) things can be configured in this way.  but there are complexities in windows that would horrify anyone if they knew about them... windows just keeps a lot of crap hidden from the user unless you know where to get to it.

The Windows registry is a good example.  This database style thing is where windows apps and the OS keeps a lot of configuration information and filesystem database stuff in the case of win nt...but.. it is a monster and in my opinion, the biggest mistake MS ever made.  Keeping config stuff in files like those in /etc on a unix linux system is far less complex and safer.  i.e. if the windows registry gets coruppted, you often loose the lot, but you could afford to loose one or two files in /etc without too much of a big deal... and you can easily back up /etc... not easy to do with the windows registry.

and the registry grows and grows as the filesystem changes and does not even get fixed up properly when you uninstall something.  Starts off as a few megs and can grow to hundreds or more.  This is also a slower way to do things than files and a fast filesystem.

I know why ms does it though... for copywriting etc   You can't just copy a program from its dir from one computer to another .. the registry info is required... but in any case, packages of software on linux are the same in that you can't just copy stuff unless you know what to copy... so really the registry is unnesesary and inefficient.

So in some ways, Linux and UNIX systems can in fact be considered to be simpler than windows with a better filesystem and better way of keeping configuration stuff.  It is just because, for the beginning user, the way to do things is not so simple and the simple ways offered by new gnome etc often let you down, that you are forced to see the complexity when you are at a beginning stage - a time when complexity is not desired.  just to set up email and web and make sure fonts look ok and set up sound and graphics... the things that are out of the box for windows, can often mean you have to go into the kernel on linux... very complex.

But the real complexity of each system may in fact be similar, it is just that linux forces you to see it earlier.  A good thing for advanced users but a bad thing for beginners or those who only want to do normal everyday things.

What Windows lacks is the ability to configure everything... this is where linux and UNIX has it all over windows, but... you have to deal with it's complexities to do it.

Things average people want to do are:
editing and viewing documents of various types
web browsing
chatting on the internet
playing with graphics
playing with audio and video
spreadsheets and other mathematical stuff
some web development and programming

All of these things are easy in windows... but each and every one can require seperate and "complex" configuring in linux if you have new hardware or even if you don't and then often things don't work.

Windows can learn from open source and linux / unix... but Unix and linux sure can learn from the user interface issues of windows... Linux is ahead on many important things... it just lacks the few things i mentioned in my last post.

I think you made some very good points. I would only like to stress the
fact that:

1) a *nix environment is probably the _best_ web server out there...
(not to mention the cheapest)

2) linux has, and probably (even though we don't like to admit it)
always will be a more complex operating system.

3) It works very well as a network server.

Other than that, compliments on your thoroughness.
