As I was writing the code I started to think of all sorts of random
things I wanted to make sure to take into account, so I stepped back to
write up how I envision the APIs at the various levels looking. I
ultimately want to throw some sequence diagrams on this page to show the
flow from a user's call as it gets all the way down to the CDS level,
but I'll hold off on those until I get closer to having them working
(and frankly, I don't have any seq diagramming software that makes it
simple enough to change around easily).

Any comments are appreciated.
