RH9 Install Problems 040416a

Hi All,

About a week ago I (attempted) installed RH9 on a K7SOM mainboard based
clone (1Ghz Duron CPU, 128MB/32 shared w/video, integrated SiS 650/740
video, sound, and Ethernet). The install seemed to go OK, but on restart,
after I logged in as root it didn't do anything else.

After google and reading a couple of times I came up with "StartX". That
gave a screen full of error message.
More google and reading...
I came up with "redhat-config-xfree86", That was exciting until I realized
that my graphics adapter (integrated SiS 650/740) was not listed.
More google and reading...
I downloaded a precompiled driver from Thomas Winischhofer's site (he seems
to be widely accepted as a guru for SiS items).
More google and reading...
I have (I think) copied it into place, but when I run XFree86 it doesn't see
anything different from before the new file. As I am typing arcane command
strings, I am reminded of a time in yesteryear when a friend was showing me
the command (by copying it carefully from the documentation) to save a file
from his NEW Commodore64 to the hard drive.

I found the XFree86.0.log file, it is pasted in below. It appears to
include the data for my Sis video, but still no joy.

It was suggested elsewhere that I should run up2date, get registered and
update XFree86. On running up2date I filled in my email and name, said RH
could have info about the PC, but did not fill-in further personal info
(which was labeled as optional). When I pressed ENTER to continue, it
seemed to, but stopped at 20% and eventually failed. I tried several times.
The first time I had indicated that XFree86 items should be updated, on
successive efforts I tried other combinations, including no updates at all.
I'm sure the during install I said no source in updates (since I don't know
squat yet about building anything). The PC can be pinged, it can ping other
hosts on the LAN and on the Internet.

I forgot to mention that the PC is setup to dual boot via grub, with Win2K
on a different partition. The grub menu and Win2K are working fine.

I have had suggestions to "start over with Fedora" or "go to Debian").
Other suggestions anyone... Is this fixable, or should I start over?

Gene
