installed new hard drive - now can't find it

First and foremost dmesg will allude to the drive, so check dmesg,
ksyms.0 in the directory /var/log/.
Second if it is a new drive it will be something other than /dev/sda*
since you already have a drive sda. If I remember it should be /dev/sdb
Email a copy of your dmesg if need be.
