PATH revisited

Ther should have been a start up script installed in /usr/bin:

/usr/bin/acroread

which calls the "real" acrobat executable in /usr/local/Acrobat5/bin or 
in your case /usr/Acrobat5/bin

Do:

locate acroread

to see if the script was installed.
