I'm a new linux user. While installing RH 9 on a computer I just bought off
ebay (750 Mhz, 80 Gig HD, 256 Megs RAM, Pro Savage4 32MB Video Card)
everything seems to go fine until x starts. At that point, the screen goes
blank and the system stops responding, and I must pull the plug. The
computer had windows 2000 on it when I got it, which seemed to boot fine.
I've since over-written the windows installation though.
I've tried installing in graphical mode. That doesn't work, the screen just
goes blank after "loading x" flashes on the screen. I've tried installing
in text mode, and booting into graphical mode. Again, the screen goes blank
at boot, when x starts. I tried installing in text mode and booting into
text mode. That works fine. I login as root fine (because I don't think
the installation gave me a chance to create other users). Then starting x
via the "startx" command kills the system; the screen goes blank and I need
to turn the computer off.
I noticed that it deteted my vid card as "P3 Savage 16MB". I'm not sure how
to check what kind of video card I have, but my ebay receipt says its a
Savage Pro4 32MB. Well, I didn't see a "P4 Savage 32MB" in the list
provided by the x configuration page during the install, so I just selected
"generic savage" and 32MB as my video card. Do you think that is my
problem? Maybe RH 9 doesn't support my video card?

I don't think xf86config exists anymore. Try
redhat-config-xfree86 --reconfig

Thanks for the advice and link Bob. I tried running that command and the
same thing happened. When I hit cntrl-Alt-backspace (thank you Aj.) it
brought me back to a prompt and showed a message saying:
The Application xconf.py lost its connection to the display :17.0; most
likely the x server was shut down or you killed/destroyed the application.
When I tried the advice at the link you provided I got the same results,
except this time the message said:
The Application 'gnome-session' lost its connection to the display :0.0;
most likely the x server was shut down or you killed/destroyed the
application.
xinit:connection to X server lost.
waiting for X server to shut down
There was a bunch of stuff above the message like this:
[144] 400 x 300 72Hz
...
[115] 800 x 600, 60Hz, 75 Hz, 85 Hz
...
SESSION_MANAGER=local/localhost.loocaldomain:/tmp/.ICE-unix/3648
AUDIT: (time/date)

I have no idea what to do about this. I suppose maybe I'll try to contact
red hat or something.

Thanks for the reply Jim, sorry this took so long. I'm very new to linux,
and I've bee quite busy at work too. It took me a long time to learn how to
transfer these via the terminal on the "broken" box (mostly because I didn't
realize the firewall was enabled by default... I'm so used to the lax
security of windows). Then I had to transfer them to my windows box because
for some reason red hat (or mozilla or something) didn't want to paste from
the clipboard into a web form (into a hotmai composition that is... I tried
yahoo too). Anyway...
the output of /sbin/lspci -n | grep "Class 0300" is
------------------------
[root at localhost /]# /sbin/lspci -n | grep "Class 0300"
01:00.0 Class 0300: 5333:8d04
------------------------
And /var/log/XFree86.0.log is

Thanks again for taking a look at this. I really don't know what to try
next. I'd hate to give up and start trying other distro's, but I'm sort of
stuck. A friend mentioned something about trying VGA or something. I'm not
sure how to do that. Even if I never get x working under red hat linux, at
least I've learned a little something about ssh, NFS, and firewalls along
the way.... :)
