aha. I had not checked those...they were a great help and the key to the issue.
The default run level was set to 5, which makes sense. I had been accustomed
to setting them in rc3.d on my RH8 box and old job(all Solaris), as none of
those servers had X installed. I had forgotten all about the logic behind the
runlevels.
