What I did was a ./configure then, as root, make; make install. It
bombed out with errors with missing directories on the make. That was
why I wanted to install the kernel source, which hasn't installed btw,
even though rpm -qi says it has :-(

The ALSA people do their best under trying circumstances I guess but I
haven't received any meaningful assistance from the alsa-users list
apart from 'wind up the volume', which is legit advice of course.

Sound worked fine until I upgraded to the 2.6.8 kernel. Sound then
mysteriously went awol, it wants to configure my wlan adaptor twice,
eth1 & eth2 then on the next boot it complains of eth2 going missing, I
remove the config and the next boot it 'finds' the wlan adaptor again
and wants to configure it again as eth2. The 2.6 kernel seems to have
more bugs in it than a swamp. One gets fixed and another gets created.
Debian stable is looking more and more attractive :-) At least one
wouldn't have the frenetic cycle of upgrades.

Do you know if I can revert to OSS? and if so, how?

I downloaded the kernel-2.6.8-1.521.src.rpm file but I cannot install
it. rpm says it installed, -qi says it is there but it must be pretty
ethereal, I cannot find it. It sure isn't in /usr/src/linux-2.6.8-1.521.
That directory doesn't exist!

If you can help I would really appreciate it but if not, then thanks for
letting me bend your ear.

Kind regards, Graeme Nichols.

The sendmail configuration file is one of those files that looks like
someone beat their head on the keyboard. After working with it... I can
see why! -- Harry Skelton
