It should never "slow down and freeze".  If it is, there's several 
possibilities.  One is that you don't have enough memory or that you
are swapping a lot.  Another is that you have some task that runs
and sucks up a lot of the system resources.

The system will run "updatedb" once a day.  This flogs your hard drive
a lot while it runs and can make the system slow.  If you leave your
machine running all the time, the system will automatically run it at
about 4 a.m., so you shouldn't notice it.  If you shut down your machine
when you're done and restart it, updatedb will run about run 65 minutes
after you reboot.
