If you want the details, the GUI program modifies the computer's name in
the "/etc/sysconfig/network" file.

/etc/hosts aids in name resolution.  By default, when you try to access
a computer by name, the system first looks in /etc/hosts to see if
there's an IP address for the computer in that file.  If so, it is used.
If the computer isn't in that file, then the DNS servers are queried.
