Grub does not appear

well, it seems to me that your computer is already unbootable to linux and
maybe xp, not sure, but to make it bootable to linux again you will need to
do a grub-install and this should be low risk, but anytime you deal with
these things there is a risk.  You reduce the risk by creating rescue disk
for windows and linux. Finally, if you want to reinstall rh9 you can do that
it doexn't matter, if you take the 1st installation disk it allows you to
boot in rescue mode and from there you will need to do a grub-install
whether it is from a new installation or using to old installation, you
can't get around that.
