No User prompt question

You got a login prompt, you entered your userid, you got a password
prompt, you entered your password, and then nothing?

Look at the logs on the remote machine, especially /var/log/messages
and /var/log/secure for clues.

Not a chance.  Without DNS you would never have gotten a login prompt.
