Still can't get the sound working

you might try this, open the volume icon by right clicking on it and when it
comes up, there is a tab that says switches. Click on this tab and there are
so little buttons.  Clear all of those  buttons and then exit.  I was
messing around with that and I activated all of the buttons and lost my
sound and it returned when I cleared them all.  You may not have to clear
them all, but you can test it to see which ones can be activated.  This may
not be your problem.  You might need to check the control panel to see if
you have sound enabled also.  And I still can't play cd's, but I'm working
on that.
