Installation with Windows Xp

I am running Windows Xp on my PC(40GB Hdd, 256MB RAM, Win path =
C:\Windows). I want to install Linux on my machine.
Can I install Linux in D drive without conflicting with Windows Xp? D drive
has about 4 GB of free space.
What are the potential traps during the installation?
