First, try running (as the root user): service syslog stop Then try unmounting /var. If you still can't unmount it, you can find out what progtrams have files open on it by doing by running this command as the root user: lsof | grep /var Find the process(es) that are still holding something on /var open and shut them down. You can shut them down rudely by doing (as root): kill -9 procid Replace "procid" with the process ID you got from the 'lsof' command for the process in question. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Senior Systems Engineer rstevens at vitalstream.com - - VitalStream, Inc. http://www.vitalstream.com - - - - C program run. Or another way? Hi, I understand that yum does a better job of automatically resolving these dependency issues. I use it on Centos 4.4 - which is a clone of RHEL 4.4. I don't know if yum is setup on RHEL however -- This e-mail was created by voice dictation using Dragon's NaturallySpeaking. There may be errors, omissions, or additions present. Or another way? Many others have said "use yum", but that's not part of the RHEL distribution (sorry gang...yum only comes on CentOS or Fedora). However, "up2date -i emacs" should do the trick if you're registered with up2date. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Senior Systems Engineer rstevens at vitalstream.com - - VitalStream, Inc. http://www.vitalstream.com - - - - Hard work has a future payoff. You can bypass the probe by specifying "noprobe" at the install prompt: boot: linux noprobe Note, however, that the machine will not be able to automatically configure things such as X-Windows since you're telling it specifically to not probe the bus. You can also try things such as "noapic" and other boot options to get past the problem. You should look carefully at the release notes and installation guide. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Senior Systems Engineer rstevens at vitalstream.com - - VitalStream, Inc. http://www.vitalstream.com - - - - A day for firm decisions!!! RHEL4 has much better support for SATA, but it's still not universal. As Mark has written, we need to know what chipset is being used for the SATA controller to advise you. You didn't say if anything is printing and the driver is not working, or if you just can't get anything to print at all, good or bad. So, assuming you can't get anything to print, here's my thought: SMB printers don't need to be 'mounted' to be printed to. The most common error is to not include the SMB-style device path in the settings. They should look like: //MEhost/prtqueue HTH, Karl > > Ideas? > > Thanks! > > Harold > > -- > FCC Rules Updated Daily at http://www.hallikainen.com - Advertising > opportunities available! > > _______________________________________________ > Redhat-install-list mailing list > Redhat-install-list at redhat.com > https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-install-list > To Unsubscribe Go To ABOVE URL or send a message to: > redhat-install-list-request at redhat.com > Subject: unsubscribe > -- karl _/ _/ _/ _/_/_/ ____________ __o _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ ____________ _-\<._ _/_/ _/ _/_/_/ (_)/ (_) _/ _/ _/ _/ ...................... _/ _/ arl _/_/_/ _/ earson KarlP at ourldsfamily.com --- Senior Consulting Sys/DB Analyst http://consulting.ourldsfamily.com --- My Thoughts on Terrorism In America right after 9/11/2001: http://www.ourldsfamily.com/wtc.shtml --- The world is a dangerous place to live... not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it. - Albert Einstein --- From karlp at ourldsfamily.com Sun Dec 17 05:56:41 2006 From: karlp at ourldsfamily.com (karlp at ourldsfamily.com) Date: Sat, 16 Dec 2006 22:56:41 -0700 (MST) Subject: Suggested network printer/scanner? I just got an HP 2575 all-in-one and love it. I can scan from Firefox and on Windows machines, you can stand at the printer and press a scan button and select which PC you want the scan to go to. It's also a nice copier. Since it's a DJ-series, it's color, too. As a flat-bed scanner, it's fairly quick and the resolution is as good as any in the range. It's got built-in jetdirect interface, but for an additional $80 U.S. you could get a wireless access point and hook it up that way. I've done it that way. My 2 bits. I've got it connected to the Linksys WAP54G running in client mode. My tests so far work pretty well! I'm using HPLIB HP Device manager and am able to print and scan from ny FC5 laptop. Great! Once you get a PC working to access the network, just plug the printer in, and assign it a static IP on the network, and go for it. It's like having a wireless card in the printer without actually having one while taking advantage of the built-in jetdirect interface. I've been running FC6 since release candidate 2. There were some initial glitches with the RC versions, but FC6 as released is quite stable and good. Lots of updates, though, and read up on SeLinux. It uses it a lot (you can turn it off, of course). I've got it running on Dell 1850s, 1950s, 2850s, 2950s and those big ol' 6450s and 6550s without trouble. Personally, I have it on a HP Pavillion (64-bit Athlon X2), HP ZV6000 laptop (Athlon 64), an Opteron 1510 (64 bit with virtualization) and an Athlon 32. Works well on all, and Xen is cool on the virtualized machines...the Pavillion runs Linux on one VM, and Windows Server 2003 on another (under strenuous protest I might add...I detest Winblows of any sort). An important note: There is no difference between an SMP and a UP kernel now. The kernel that gets installed autosenses SMP and fires it up, so don't freak out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Senior Systems Engineer rstevens at vitalstream.com - - VitalStream, Inc. http://www.vitalstream.com - - - - C program run. Often different kernels will scan the PCI bus differently and the names will change. I hit this with two kernels with minor rev changes on a single Dell 2850. Even the same kernel run on two slightly different hardware platforms will cause issues. A Dell 2850 scans the motherboard first, then the PCI bus. A Dell 1850 will scan the PCI bus first, THEN the motherboard. Sheesh! Consistency, please! The most reliable method to tie an interface name to a specific NIC is to either create an /etc/mactab file with the entries in it, e.g.: eth0 aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff eth1 gg:hh:ii:jj:kk:ll or add the "MACADDR=aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff" line to the ifcfg-ethX file involved. Of the two, I prefer the second one ("MACADDR="). One less thing to look at (if you have a problem with NIC naming, check the network config files instead of something in /etc). You can edit the interfaces name from here, knowing which is which. But you have to be clearly with this cos if you don't do it well, the NICs won't start up. Another option is by editing the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts for the ifcfg-* for the changes you want to make. The last option (which I have not tested) is to edit the ifconfig-eth* files themselves. The eth* name is always there and I think the mac address too. The location of the files are /etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/* and /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default/*. The ifconfig-eth* must be the same in both for it work.
