You can install any OS first. When you install Windows first and you're now installing Redhat, don't clear the MBR. Let it install the bootloader just on a partition on the hard-disk (/dev/hda6 for example). You can then boot with the First CD or boot disk to get hold of the Redhat installation. Then run dd if=/dev/hdax of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=2 (where x is the drive your /boott partition resides in which is /dev/hda6 in this case) You can then copy the /bootsect.lnx to windows partition. (assuming you have copied it to c:\bootsect.lnx) Then edit c:/boot.ini in windows using notepad or using edit from command line. Add a new entry like c:\bootsect.lnx="My Redhat" and save. This one has no built in floppy or CD drive, but comes with a CD-ROM drive that plugs in the PCMCIA slot. I can get the FC6 CD to boot in there, but it then asks for additional drivers, apparently to read the CD that it has already read. Any ideas as to what's going on? Also, I note that Fedora 7 distributions seem to just be on DVD, which her computer does not have, thus my try at FC6. I also considered booting from USB, but the BIOS does not support that. Is there any sort of DOS program (DOS box under Windows) that one can run to tell it to boot off a USB flash drive? Windows knows the flash drive is there, so it SEEMS there ought to be a little program that says "read this drive..." THANKS! If your old machine was running an older version of the OS, you may want to start fresh with the latest release. If that's the case, then install the new OS first, update it completely, then transfer your content to it. If you're happy with the current system, then you can certainly plug the old hard drive in and run it--provided the hardware platforms are compatible. In other words, if the old platform was a 64-bit beast (Opteron, Athlon-64, IA-64), you can't use it on a 32-bit machine. If the old one was 32-bit, it should work on a 64-bit machine. The most likely other things you'll need to tweak are the network drivers (odds are that the new machine will use different NICs than the old one). These are the "alias eth0 somedrivername" lines in your /etc/modprobe.conf file. Kudzu may or may not find them when you boot the old OS on the new hardware. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Principal Engineer rstevens at internap.com - - VitalStream, Inc. http://www.vitalstream.com - - - - Veni, Vidi, VISA: I came, I saw, I did a little shopping. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From manishksoin at yahoo.co.in Sat Jul 14 06:00:00 2007 From: manishksoin at yahoo.co.in (manish soin) Date: Sat, 14 Jul 2007 11:30:00 +0530 (IST) Subject: unable to boot Fedora Core (2.6.20-1.2962.fc6xen) Message-ID: <535354.28048.qm@web8813.mail.in.yahoo.com> I recently upgraded my fedora core 6 from Fedora Core (2.6.18-1.2798.fc6xen) to Fedora Core (2.6.20-1.2962.fc6xen). The video support in Fedora core 7 needs to be worked on, obviously, as judged against other Linux distros like OpenSuSE 10.2 (for an example please, see Xen Virtualization on Sun Ultra 20: < http://metztli-it.com/blog >. Both, the Fedora core 7 32- and 64-bit distros --with and without Xen-- had to be installed/started in text mode because the Fedora installation routine did not recognize the Sun Ultra 20 built in ATI video card (ATI ES1000 2D Graphics Controller). On the other hand, both 32- and 64-bit OpenSuSE's equivalents had no problem installing in GUI mode and subsequently booting into GDM. If you are able to boot to a text login prompt, login as root and attempt to start your (login GUI) GDM or KDM as follows (after you are logged in as root, of course), type: init 5 Wait a few seconds... If that works, all you have to do is configure GDM or KDM to greet you :) Hope that works for you. The "kbcached" column of "sar -r" reports the amount of cache used. As far as I know, it can't split active and inactive out. The active section of /proc/meminfo is what's used for code, BSS and heap of programs on the run queue (in other words, memory dedicated to runnable programs). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Principal Engineer rstevens at internap.com - - VitalStream, Inc. http://www.vitalstream.com - - - - Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From karlp at ourldsfamily.com Tue Jul 24 04:27:59 2007 From: karlp at ourldsfamily.com (Karl Pearson) Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2007 22:27:59 -0600 (MDT) Subject: Using meminfo information In-Reply-To: <1185225346.24947.81.camel@prophead.corp.publichost.com> References: <1185225346.24947.81.camel@prophead.corp.publichost.com> Message-ID: <17899.198.60.114.90.1185251279.squirrel@webmail.ourldsfamily.com> On Mon, July 23, 2007 3:15 pm, Rick Stevens wrote: > On Mon, 2007-07-23 at 13:51 -0700, Waldher, Travis R wrote: >> > -----Original Message----- >> > From: Rick Stevens [mailto:rstevens at internap.com] >> > Sent: Monday, July 23, 2007 1:10 PM >> > To: Getting started with Red Hat Linux >> > Subject: Re: Using meminfo information >> > >> > On Mon, 2007-07-23 at 12:54 -0700, Waldher, Travis R wrote: >> > > I am trying to determine how much memory really is in use on the >> > > system for executing commands. I give. If meminfo can tell us active memory, why can't sar. It would be pretty easy to write a script to give yourself the information you need. If that information is needed by another program/CGI, then use printf $VAR in it... Okay, more than was asked. After I install rhel 4.3 however grub doesn't even load, so it leads me to believe that this is a problem with the version of grub not a kernel problem/install problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated, GREATLY. I've been working on this at work for a month now. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I could call Redhat but that company is almost as bad as MS when it comes to feature requests. I could write a script that collects it at the same frequency as sar, but we have users that get upset when a process is running on a machine since it could "slow them down". Office politics mostly. I liked sar because that was already running in the background so they had nothing to complain about. What irks me - sar is collecting the information that it does have out of the meminfo file, if not directly, indirectly. :( From rstevens at internap.com Tue Jul 24 20:01:05 2007 From: rstevens at internap.com (Rick Stevens) Date: Tue, 24 Jul 2007 13:01:05 -0700 Subject: s5000psl installation issues In-Reply-To: <59b2a6ef0707240723k6da3a38btbe77caa537fa50b6@mail.gmail.com> References: <59b2a6ef0707240723k6da3a38btbe77caa537fa50b6@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <1185307265.15530.53.camel@prophead.corp.publichost.com> On Tue, 2007-07-24 at 10:23 -0400, Tommy Fullington wrote: > I am currently trying to install redhat enterprise 4.3 on a intel > s5000psl board using raid five, I have installed Suse 10.2 enterprise > on this board (using the megasar raid drivers.) and the only problem I > had was needing to change some setting in fstab, grub loaded and the > system ran just fine. I'm assuming that grub loaded fine without the change to fstab, since grub doesn't use fstab. fstab is only used after the Linux kernel starts. > After I install rhel 4.3 however grub doesn't even load, so it leads > me to believe that this is a problem with the version of grub not a > kernel problem/install problem. What specifically do you see when you try it? You could also try booting the first CD in rescue mode. Let the system mount the existing system, then (assuming your RAID 5 shows up as /dev/sda): # chroot /mnt/sysimage # grub-install /dev/sda # exit # exit Pop out the CD and try to reboot. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Principal Engineer rstevens at internap.com - - VitalStream, Inc. http://www.vitalstream.com - - - - Brain: The organ with which we think that we think. - ----------------------------------------------------------------------
