Uncompress .Z files

Hmm, you must be doing something wrong then. It should redierct stdout to the
file you specifie, not to stdout. A couple ways this should be done.
Let's assume your file is called henry-1.00.tar.Z:
Method 1:
# tar xvfz henry-1.00.tar.Z
Method 2:
# zcat henry-1.00.tar.Z > henry-1.00.tar
# tar xvf henry-1.00.tar
Either _should_ work.
