Thanks to Rick Stevens, Bob McClure, et al. for their attention. It turned out that I had a machine capable of running modern stuff, just obscured by a thick layer of XP. I have successfully installed CentOS 5.3 on it. In the process of my attempts I also bought a second hand box that turned-out to have an i686, though apparently a slow one. My question involves that box. It apparently runs at 550 Mhz, and now has plenty of disk space and memory (just under a gig of memory, and it survived one pass of memtest86 without error). I have tried to install CentOS on this box, too, but cannot get X to run. I get all the way to the blue screen with the doily on it, but no desktop icons. (Icons are on the bars at top and bottom, but there is no sign of Home, Trash, and computer on the blue desktop). I have tried Gnome, KDE, and another whose name escapes me at the moment but is supported by switchdesk. I have also compared the tail ends of /var/log/Xorg.0.log on the two machines, the one that works and the one that doesn't. They both end in the same place. I suspect that the older machine just doesn't have the horsepower for CentOS 5.3, and next intend to try an older version of CentOS. But before doing so I wanted to ask if there was something I should do first, like examine some other log file or a kernel parameter to try. I would like to get 5.3 with X going if possible. I would appreciate any suggestions. One of the machines is attached to a printer and the printer is published via Cups so it can be seen and utilized by all the other machines on the network. Thus far everything works great. All machines can see the printer and all machines can print to it. That's just the way it should be... EXCEPT!!! Except for one machine downstairs. It was seeing and printing to the printer just fine. Now, all of a sudden, over the last couple of days it no longer see's any networked printers. It was accessing and printing to the networked printer just fine up until a couple days ago. Now, it is suddenly the only machine on my network that can't see or access the printer. So, where do I begin to troubleshoot this problem ? The only possible change that may have occur ed over the last couple of days is that Cups may have been updated during a routine yum update. But all my other machines have been updated similarly and they are not experiencing this problem. Furthermore I checked the config files and everything looks okay. Any ideas ? The machine that is having the issue is running Fedora 11. But, so are most machines on my network, and they are having no issues with printing. Any help appreciated.... Thanks John. Have you tried installing a new printer and letting it 'find' your networked printers? Also, have you tried using a network tool to see if that PC can see the network correctly, such as nmap or just telnet N where N = a port# you suspect, such as 631? Just a thought. Give us the details of what you find, if anything. Karl > > > Any help appreciated.... Was the machine updated automatically? Did you check its firewall settings to make sure printing is allowed? You can try turning off iptables ("service iptables stop" as root) and see if it works. If so, make sure you allow IPP through its firewall (TCP/UDP port 631). Is selinux enabled? I updated the machine a week or so ago so, it is possible that it could have happened after the update but I may not have realized it since I am not the regular user of that particular machine. I didn't try munging around with iptables yet. I'll try that tomorrow and let y'all know what happens. The only difference between this machine and the others is that this particular machine is connected to the network via wireless and the rest of the machines are connected via copper. However, it is still attached to the same network, it see's all other stuff across the network and, it was seeing the printers until a few days ago. In any event, if I cannot get it to work I'll report back with some more detailed info, messages, etc. John From micros50 at verizon.net Tue Oct 20 19:43:51 2009 From: micros50 at verizon.net (Micros50) Date: Tue, 20 Oct 2009 15:43:51 -0400 Subject: Can No Longer See Networked Printer (SOLVED) In-Reply-To: <4ADCDDCB.50808@nerd.com> References: <1255979203.2881.13.camel@manhattan.ruffe.edu> <4ADCDDCB.50808@nerd.com> Message-ID: <1256067831.10864.15.camel@manhattan.ruffe.edu> On Mon, 2009-10-19 at 14:44 -0700, Rick Stevens wrote: > > > > Any ideas ? After an update, the two most common problems are SELinux policy and iptables changes. That was one of the first things I tried and it came up empty, iptables was preventing it from seeing anything running on port 631. > Also, have you tried using a network tool to see if > that PC can see the network correctly, such as nmap or just telnet N > where N = a port# you suspect, such as 631? > > Just a thought. As soon as I flushed the firewall it was able to see the printers. So all I had to do was change my firewall/iptables rules. Now it's running fine with both seLinux and iptables active. I'll keep that in mind for any future problems I may encounter. I wasn't aware that iptables rules could be altered during an upgrade. From now on my first step will be to make sure whatever has disappeared is not being fire-walled or seLinux'ed into oblivion. In any event thanks for helping me out with this. It is great to have it working right again. :) John From karlp at ourldsfamily.com Tue Oct 27 18:32:00 2009 From: karlp at ourldsfamily.com (Karl Pearson) Date: Tue, 27 Oct 2009 12:32:00 -0600 Subject: [Fwd: The certificate for mydomain.com has expired] Message-ID: I get this daily. I choose 'no' at that > point. Two things: - When you make a self-signed cert, be sure to specify an expiry more than 30 days hence, which is the default. The warning comes from /etc/cron.daily/certwatch, which starts warning at 30 days to go. To make a year-long self-signed cert, genkey --days 365 mydomain.com If you already have an active key for that domain, genkey will carp and you will need to rename it out of the way, say, with a ".old" suffix. In the dialogs, give it a null passphrase (just hit [Enter]), tell it you do not need a CSR, and no encryption at the end. - After generating the new cert and key, run apachectl graceful to put it into effect. Another hint: genkey is a Perl script in /usr/bin/genkey. You may want to modify the defaults in the script to what you will always want. Also, if you never have any use for SSL on that box, but still want the web server running, rename /etc/httpd/conf.d/ssl.conf to something like ssl.conf.off, and "apachectl graceful". certwatch checks only loaded certs in the server. If you have none, it will remain quiet. > TIA, > > Karl > > --------------------------- Original Message --------------------------- > > ################# SSL Certificate Warning ################ > > Certificate for hostname 'mydomain.com', in file: > /etc/pki/tls/certs/server.crt > > The certificate needs to be renewed; this can be done > using the 'genkey' program. > > Browsers will not be able to correctly connect to this > web site using SSL until the certificate is renewed. > > ########################################################## > Generated by certwatch(1) > > > And who is certwatch and why are they looking at this server? -- karl Cheers, -- Bob McClure, Jr. Bobcat Open Systems, Inc. bob at bobcatos.com http://www.bobcatos.com Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.
