X-windows will not start with new kernel

I installed RHEL 3.0 runs and selected gnome as windows windows manager
during setup.  The computer comes with an integrated ATI Rage-XL
PCI-based VGA controller with 4 MB of PC100 SDRAM, RHEL detected it as
ATI Mach64.  Anyhow, X works fine at this point.

I downloaded and compiled the 2.4.27 kernel.

When I boot up, I get this error message I expect to see the gui login
screen:
"I cannot start the X server (your graphical interface).  It is likely
that it is not set up correctly.  Would you like to view the X server
outpout to diagnose the problem?"

The /var/log/XFree86.0.log file doesn't show any (WW), (EE), (NI), or
(??) markers.

Did I miss something in menuconfig when I compiled the 2.4.27 kernel?
