Backspace key in terminals

Could you look in the file /etc/X11/XF86Config and see what is in
Section "InputDevice" for the keyboard?

You should see something like:

         Option      "XkbRules" "xfree86"
         Option      "XkbModel" "pc105"
         Option      "XkbLayout" "us"
