FC3 boot freeze

folks, i've finally installed FC3 on my IBM A22p laptop (ATI 128 Rage
Mobility) but when it tries to start X it just sits there with a big
mouse pointer in the middle. entering "linux=s" from grub's doesn't
take me to the maintenance mode or single user.

how can i fix this if i'm not able to boot in console?
