rdist command "Permission denied."

When I try to use 'rdist' I get this error:

seahawk: updating host seahawk
seahawk: LOCAL ERROR: Unexpected input from server: "Permission denied.".
seahawk: updating of seahawk finished

I have the hostname entry in the /etc/hosts.equiv file.
