Hang related to Internet connection

Greetings:

I'm running under Gnome.

I started ppp with modprobe ppp_async, logged on to the Internet, then
set up the consoles to tail -f, then tried loading Evoltion. It hung, so
I left my desk for 15 minutes and came back and it was loaded.

Here are the three logs requested.

The only thing that looks suspicious seems to be the following:

Jul 7 08:30:58 localhost kernel: <1>Unable to handle kernel NULL
pointer dereference at virtual address 00000005
Jul 7 08:30:58 localhost kernel: printing eip:
Jul 7 08:30:58 localhost kernel: c012b815
Jul 7 08:30:58 localhost kernel: *pde = 00000000
Jul 7 08:30:58 localhost kernel: Oops: 0002

This happens when I try to get online; I don't have to try to load
Evolution to cause this. Am I correct in assuming that the "tainted"
message that also appears in /var/log/messages has to do with the Agere
winmodem driver which has proprietary code?

Should I try KDE? I switched to it very briefly recently, got a message
about not being able to configure my sound card, and went back to Gnome.
