FYI: perl causes kernel panic in RHEL v3 update 2 for AMD64

Just for everyone's info. much less to see if anyone has seen this 
problem, much less fixed it:

There is a kernel panic (fatal exception) with perl when compiling 
rrdtool-1.0.48. The environment is RHEL v3 update 2 for AMD x86_64 (AMD 
Opteron)

Anyone else had this problem, or something like it?
