Remove the "p" from that line:

define(`confAUTH_OPTIONS', `A y')dnl

Done, I think. Restart sendmail to have the changes take effect. I need to 
update the Sendmail SMTP AUTH HOWTO to reflect this difference in procedure 
on newer systems, but damned if I can ever find the time. Sorry.
