kernel compile error

Every time I try to compile kernel 2.6.7 (vanilla sources) on rh9 I get
segmentation fault.
Apparently it doesn't break every time in the same place, but the error is
the same. The system is running RH9 with latest updates,
gcc is gcc version 3.2.2 20030222 (Red Hat Linux 3.2.2-5) and currently
running kernel 2.6.5
on Athlon XP 2000+ with 512 DDRAM.

after make mrproper and loadin the same .config I get:
