Lockups with FTP and Samba data transfers

Has anyone seen a fix for complete system lockup when trying to transfer large binary files from Windows 2000 to RH 9? This happens when trying to copy the files into the Linux system from a Windows server for files 500 MB and greater. Seems to be intermittent, I have had success copying zip files with Passive off in binary mode.
