Yes.

I have even seen system booting half-way and then freezing or switching off due to faulty power supply.

Power supply produces 5V, 12V and 3.3V. CD-ROMs only use 5V and 12V. If, for example 3.3V supply has failed, system will not boot up.

Could the power supply be the problem even though the fan on the power supply
is giving good air movement? It sure would be an easy solution.
