make moduels failed on linux-2.4.21-15.EL

after you enable your specific options with xconfig, mv the .config 
file created in /usr/src/linux out of the src tree, make mrproper, then 
mv .config back, do a make oldconfig, make dep; make clean, make 
bzImage, make modules...  this worked for me the last time i got a 
slough of cryptic compilation errors  on make modules.
