This is a known problem with some motherboard/bios combinations. What
you need to do is turn off APM in the kernel. Modify all of the kernel
lines in grub.conf to add apm=off, like so:
> kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-30.9smp ro root=LABEL=/ apm=off
