a few people have stated that i should repartition my drive to expand the '/' root section...
how can i accomplish this (what commands do i need to do this) without screwing up the harddrive/apps on the drive...

Try running df -h to see how much free space you have.
I suspect you do not have enough.
Post the return results if you wish.
