Why Linux can't visit public net?

[root at www root]# ping www.sina.com
ping: unknown host www.sina.com

look this indicate error have to possbile valid reason either t your
dns which u configured that is not working or u did not configure dns
in your /etc/reslove.conf
 
use your favorite editor like vi and open file /etc/reslove.conf and add like 
nameserver YOUR_NAME_SERVER_IP

if u dont know how to use vi editor than give command like
echo " YOUR_NAMESERVER_IP >> /etc/reslove.conf

doing this try to ping www.sina.com it must reslove. using dns which u
r using in linux..got it. ...

if u r using ipchains 
/sbin/ipchains -F or iptable /sbin/iptables- F 
After...

his reslut indicate your gatway end there router or machine is
filtering ICMP traffic.
try to ping www.yahoo.com and check it..

otherwise there will not be any issue.

kindly paste /sbin/route -n out put so we will get idea also...
