Yes, I think so.  from the logs you provide, there are one or two errors
with configuration details.  Perhaps uninstalling the package left some
cruft behind in your config files?

Create a new user, then "borrow" his
.gconf/
.gconfd/
.gnome/
.gnome2/
.gnome2_private/
.gnome-desktop/

directories.  You'll lose your previously customized workspace, but that may
be better than having none at all.
