Mine's similar. I have a backup server that do this using rsnapshot from other 
machines. Then the backup server export the backup volume as NFS read only. 
The machines mount their relevant backup volume as /yesterdays, so users can 
read their 'older' files.

Access to backup server is very restricted (in this case, only I have access). 
But if one happens to "rm -rf /" in the backup server, well, that's either 
very bad luck, or ... (fill in the blank yourself )  :)
