xxdiff problems

Hi.  I'm new to the list.  Let me know if I violate any protocol.

I recently fought through an installation of xxdiff and xxdiff-cvs-diff 
and have run into a strange error when I try to test xxdiff-cvs-diff out.

this is the error output:
