Tape backup

I am running RHEL 4 on an HP DL385 and have tried to connect an HP 
Ultrium tape drive to it. I did this on an identical server and the 
server found it and created the proper devices in the /dev directory. 
When I connect it to this system it doesn't create the tape files in 
the /dev directory. Any ideas and/or more info needed?
