System Error logs

[Chiu, PCM (Peter)]

Did try dmesg, but cannot find them.

The system actually went very sluggish at one stage (possibly due to the
disk faults
and a number of error messages displaying at the console), so I have
power-cycled the box.

It will be useful to track these errors somehow...

I have seen error messages (disk relating) throwing out at the console,
but I cannot locate them under /var/log/messages* or any files under 
this directory.

Are they kept in any log file?
