Cannot use Putty or xterm to get to my new Redhat machines.

I would suggest your to check below things.
1. Iptables rules has been correctly configured. Try stopping iptables service and then connecting to machine.
2. Check /var/log/messages for any error logs.
3. network on the system has been correctly configured.
Let me know the results.
