Which shell are you using?
ksh/bash/zsh: ipaddr=`grep truc /etc/hosts | cut -f1 -d" "` (note the
graves (back ticks))
csh/tcsh: set ipaddr `grep truc /etc/hosts | cut -f1 -d" "` (note the
graves (back ticks))
