how to find out one of the servers is down

Are you wanting a web interface or a windows desktop application.  IP Sentry
is a good application.  You could set up a Perl script running in Linux that
can do ping requests to the IP addresses of your servers periodically.  If a
server doesn't respond it can inform you.
