mkinitrd -v -f --preload=sd_mod --preload=ata_piix --preload=ide-scsi /boot/initrd-2.6.9-prep.img 2.6.9-prep fix it and the kernel now successfully boots past the mkrootdev stage. btw. hw is a dell 750 (ide)
