The best "books" I found were the ones in the RHEL documentation set.
My approach was to start with a fresh install of RHEL on a new system
and I worked my way through every page of the RHEL manuals.  I remember
reading a paragraph that said you need a certain directory to boot so I
deleted it and tried to boot (the book was right :-)).  I found
different ways to render a system unbootable learned how to recover.

I haven't checked the RHEL doc set recently but there should be PAM doc
in there.

I took the Rapid Track Course and it's a good one.  Pay lots of
attention, study every night, and if the instructor will let you, stay a
bit longer, especially on the Thursday when you do the troubleshooting
exercises.

When you get to the exam, don't even think about leaving early.  Check,
double-check, and triple-check your work.  It may make the difference
between a pass and a fail.
