RedHat Server hangs... how to troubleshoot.

We've got a couple of RX4640's too. I updated them both to RHAS Update 2 and that stopped the X server from working. I couldn't be bothered to fix it so I changed the runlevel to 3. However, we have some DL servers to that updating caused the X server to fail, and on them I reverted back to the X11 rpms off the install CD.

By default the server won't respond to telnet unless telnet-server is installed. 

What does it do that indicates the server has hung ? I've had a gander at the dmesg output you sent but there's nothing amiss that I can see.
