System backup

	There are few commercial backup programs available, and the one I've
used for years since my SCO era is Lone-Tar.  It includes bootable recovery
from CD, where it will recover with a minimal system that lets your last
master tape re-create everything onto a blank disk - just start it and walk
away.  It will also support DVD writing for backups and allow you to use its
own software compression.  I work with accounting systems, and those files
are almost 10-1 compressible, so a DVD+RW that holds 8.9 GB can be used for
huge amounts of data.

	It has both character menus and a GUI screen for X, with easy
utilities to configure cron jobs, email alerts, and device setup.  It is
pretty end-user friendly.  Through resellers you can get it for $299 US last
time I sold it.  In interest of full disclosure, I also am one of their
resellers, but since I recommended it often enough to people, I decided to
supply it.

	Ok, booting from tape may not be possible I agree. But what I need
is commercially supported backup solution that uses a tape drive to hold the
bulk of the backup. This is for customer we sale our application to. We want
to be able to recommend something. We do NOT want to provide any scripts or
other programs for them to do their system backup with because we do not
want to be directly responsible for it.

Backups use Tar.

Bootable tapes not possible, but dvd-r's would be with a rh kickstart
system on the dvd and a script to do the tar restore as one hit.

        I am sure this has been asked many times and I searched the web
and got a lot of hits. But I though I would ask again here to see what
is recommended and why. In other words tell me what you like and which
ones to stay away from. I need something that is basically simple that
writes to a direct attached tape drive. It would be nice if the backup
was bootable to be able to do a complete bare metal restore.
