Randomly losing connection to server

Duplicate IP on the network. Thanks everyone.

Next time I'll be using arp tables instead of relying on ping to see if an
address is in use!

If that is all that changed, most likely the address you chose is in use by
something else. In a switched environment you will see what you are seeing.
I always have a box running arpwatch or a similar utility that will notify
you when something like this happens.
