Thanks Manuel. I'm actually installing mysql from RPM using up2date.
I'll change the entry in /etc/passwd. I'm wondering if I should file
this as a bug in bugzilla...

By default no
When installing MySQL from sources I always use:
groupadd mysql
useradd mysql -c "MySQL Server" -d /dev/null -g mysql -s /sbin/nologin
And then all compiling options...
If you wish to know which options I use, all you have to do is ask ;-)
Greetings.
